Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Infrastructure Innovations, Assessment and Management

at Washington University in St. Louis

Applications are NOT being taken for Summer 2008 due to limited funding.

Civil engineers are the builders of the infrastructure of the world. Today’s civil engineers face challenges such as developing strategies to enhance a structure’s ability to withstand severe dynamic loading due to natural and man-made hazards, effective utilization of advanced materials to increase the safety and ductility of structures, appropriate assessment and management of structures and highways, and the innovative use of composite materials to improve durability.

The Department of Civil Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis is accepting applications for the Structural Engineering Research Experiences for Undergraduates. Undergraduates from diverse backgrounds will be given an opportunity to spend 10 weeks this (2006) summer working on state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary research projects in infrastructure innovations, assessment, and management. To see some of the projects that former REU participants have worked on, see the 1999 Program page, the 2000 Program page, the 2001 Program page, the 2002 Program page, 2003 Program, the 2004 Program page, the 2005 Program,  the 2006 Program, or the 2007 Program page. Additionally, participants will have an opportunity to go on industry tours and site visits. Communication skills will be stressed and training in giving oral presentations and written research papers will be offered. Participants will be provided with a stipend as well as relocation and housing allowances. Participants are also encouraged to publish their research results. Several REUs have done so over the years. See our publications page for more details.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students from science, math and engineering backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Women and minority students are strongly encouraged to apply. To be eligible for the REU program, applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Further, applicants must be enrolled full-time in a degree program leading to a bachelor's degree. Students who have received their bachelor's degree before the program begins can not be considered.
